Merivaara – Design of the new Q-Flow luminaires

The smaller luminaires in Merivaara’s Q-Flow range were renewed. The redesigned luminaires continue the design tradition of the award-winning Q-Flow operating theatre luminaire.

Owned by Lojer, Merivaara Oy is a Finnish company that is a leading designer and manufacturer of operating theatre equipment and hospital furniture based in Lahti, Finland. Our long collaboration with Merivaara continued when the time came to update the smaller luminaires in the Q-Flow product family. The luminaires were renewed both in terms of technical features and design, and the final product, implemented in close cooperation with Merivaara’s designers, healthcare experts and Seos Design’s design team, serves the end users even better.

When designing luminaires for hospital environments, it is of paramount importance that their use does not unnecessarily occupy the attention of the caring staff. To achieve this, it must be possible to move the luminaire and adjust its luminous intensity with only one hand, as naturally as possible. The latest Q-Flow luminaires are fully operable with one hand and are designed to be as intuitive and ergonomic as possible, so that the user does not have to look up from the patient.

The design language of the redesigned luminaires was naturally inspired by the award-winning Q-Flow surgical luminaire launched in 2017. The luminaire’s dynamic and clear shapes are driven not only by aesthetics but also by practice. The small gaps left by the split seams are potential hiding places for bacteria and make careful cleaning difficult. The updated design of the new Q-Flow luminaires was selected through an iterative process in which the number of split seams was minimised, ensuring excellent cleanability.
